Should you choose a door knob or a door lever? It might seem like a simple task, but door hardware can make a huge impact on the style and function of your space. Unless you are an interior designer or building contractor, most people don’t put much thought into a door knob vs door lever.

Either option can be practical and functional, depending on the use of the door. There is no solitary reason why you should choose door knobs vs door levers- and vice versa. However, both have drawbacks and benefits that may be cause for choosing a lever over a knob for your home or building.

Benefits of Door Knobs

Even the most basic of door knobs can add a touch of style to your home's aesthetic. One reason why people choose door knobs is that you can find so many styles, designs, and finishes. This makes it incredibly easy to choose a door knob that fits the appearance you’re after.

Door knobs are also practical and affordable. When fitted with the right latches, the knob can be turned either way. In terms of grip, you can opt for an egg or palm-shaped door knob for easier opening and closing.

Disadvantages of Door Knobs

While door knobs do come in many styles and options, there are a few reasons why knobs might not be right for you. Obviously, your standard door knob will NOT provide as much grip as a lever. Children and seniors might have difficulty turning it, which will make everyday use very frustrating.

Another disadvantage lies in the modern design of some doors. For example, you cannot set a knob back far enough into a full-height glass door.

Benefits of Door Levers

Door levers are definitely a more modern alternative to door knobs. We’ve seen them slowly outplace knobs on interior doors and external doors alike.

Similar to door knobs, levers are made in a wide variety of finishes, styles, and designs. Even the backplates are diverse to allow for greater function, such as incorporating a keyhole.

Above all else, the main benefit of choosing door levers over door knobs is the ease of use. Regardless of the grip strength of the user, a lever can be opened easily. Think of the last time you used your elbow to open a door with a lever.

Disadvantages of Door Levers

If you are designing an older period home, a lever might not complement the aesthetic very well. Such modern door hardware might distract from the feel of the room.

But the main disadvantage of door levers vs door knobs is snagging. How many times has your clothing or bag gotten caught on a lever handle? This can be annoying if you’re not careful.
